Slot

The word slot is an obsolete noun that originally meant “a hollow place at the base of the throat, above the breastbone.” Its current sense comes from the 16th century, and its use in the sense “to fit something into a place” dates back to the 1940s. In hockey, the slot is the area between the faceoff circles and is sometimes referred to as the scoring area. Today, it is mostly used in the context of gambling.

The slot in hockey is a prime location for defensemen to get a great shot. Sometimes a defender will shoot a blistering slap shot into the net. Other times, a winger or center will put his stick out in front of the goalie to redirect the shot. Sometimes, these shots can be so powerful that they can reach 100 mph. In any case, the goalie must react lightning fast to stop them. This is why a well-placed one-timer from the high slot can be one of the most impressive shots in hockey.
