The origins of poker are murky. The word poque was used by pickpockets to refer to cards. This term was eventually changed to “poke” and was then used by card hustlers to cheat unsuspecting opponents. As the game developed, the “r” may have been added to confuse players who knew the slang. The rules of poker are straightforward, but there is a small element of cheating.
